The Men's Quarterfinals were today, and boy were there some surprises. Shock of the day came when Roger Federer lost to Tomas Berdych in 4 sets. We almost had another shocker with Nadal, but he was able to bounce back and win his match against Soderling. The draw for the Semis stands as thus:
Berdych vs Djokovic
Murray vs. Nadal
Predictions: I would love to see a Djokovic-Murray Final match, but I also realize Murray will have a real fight if he wants to beat Nadal. For that matter, anyone who beats Roger Federer is someone to watch out for, so Djokovic better be careful if he doesn't want to be eliminated.
The Ladies Semifinals are tomorrow, and unfortunately do not include my favorite player that from the Quarters - Kim Clijsters. Instead we can look forward to Serena Williams vs Kvitova and Zvonareva vs Pironkova. The only player I even know anything about here is Serena, and I'll be shocked if she doesn't at the very least make it to the Finals. Then again, none of my predictions from the Quarters proved to be right (except Serena winning her match) so I guess I'm not one to judge the Ladies side of this tournament. Like I said in a previous post though, I am much more familiar with the Men's draw. That's probably why the only one I got wrong on that side was Federer losing (and let's be honest - no one saw that coming).

World Cup News - Quarterfinal Matches
After a month of following the best teams in the world, the World Cup Quarterfinals are finally here. Matches start July 2nd. First will be Netherlands vs. Brazil at 10am followed by Uruguay vs. Ghana at 2:30pm. Ghana beat Team USA to make it this far, so it's ok to route for Uruguay to get a little payback. Don't worry, it won't make you a bad person to do so...
July 3rd will conclude the Quarters with Argentina vs. Germany followed by Paraguay vs. Spain. With Team USA knocked out of this tournament, I've been routing for Germany to go all the way to the finish line.
Predictions: Seeing as how I didn't see either Uruguay or Ghana making it this far, it's hard for me to say here which one will come out with the win. I'm going to hazard a guess and say Uruguay (mostly it's just a hope they do come out with the win actually, but I'm still putting my money on them anyway). As for the Netherlands-Brazil match, I predict great things and a possible upset here. If Brazil wins, it is not going to be easy. For tomorrow's matches - I like Germany and Spain for the wins there. If I'm right it means a Germany-Spain semifinal, which would make this football fan very happy.
Who do you think will make it to the Semifinals? And what team are you routing for now that USA is out? Sound off in the comments section below.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Trailer
Mugglenet uploaded the official trailer for HP & the Deathly Hallows earlier tonight, and boy does it look good. I have been looking forward to this installment since the book first came out a few years ago. Now that it is here, it's hard to believe though. I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around the fact that this time next year we will be closing the final chapter of the Harry Potter saga. When the last book was released, we still had the movies to look forward to. Now that the last movies are being released, what do we have left? I suppose we can always go visit Hogwarts through a nice Florida vacation, but it won't be the same kind of anticipation that we had with the books and movies. Thinking about it is rather depressing though, and I would rather just be excited about this trailer, if you don't mind. Said trailer can be found below, for your viewing pleasure. Or if you like, you can go to the website it was originally posted on. Enjoy : )

Doctor Who - Vincent and the Doctor
As usually is the case when doing a review/recap of a thing, SPOILERS HAPPEN HERE. So you should probably go watch the episode being reviewed before reading any further. Just saying...
This week's episode features one of my favorite artists: Vincent van Gogh (played brilliantly by Tony Curran). Anyone who thought they recognized the actor might remember him from Underworld: Evolution (he played Marcus) or any number of guest appearances on various shows (The Mentalist, 24, and Numb3rs being among them). Full list of credits can be found here.
Van Gogh may be one of the most famous painters today, but back in his day he was not so fortunate. It's a shame really, because his work is actually quite good. One of my favorite paintings of all time is his Starry Night. (For those who care, my other favorite is Portrait of a German Officer by Marsden Hartley). But that really has nothing to do with van Gogh or Doctor Who, so I should probably move along to something more relevant…
Van Gogh suffered from mental illness, something I am quite interested in as a Psychology student. Even without that psychological background though, you could still tell it was going to be interesting to see how crazy old van Gogh would interact with The Doctor. I definitely was not disappointed. Especially not with invisible creatures that only the crazy painter can see running around. (Sidebar: loved The Doctor's gadget that made it so he could see the beast-y as well). Armed with "overconfidence, this [referring to a briefcase holding gadget-of-the-day] and a small screwdriver" he finds said beast-y inside the church that van Gogh is painting and goes after it.
A word to The Doctor - you should know that when you tell Amy to wait somewhere, she is NOT GOING TO LISTEN TO YOU. So really you should just stop trying and let her do her own thing.
Because she's going to anyway.
Whether you like it or not.
So there.
Moving right along then…
Beast-y bites the dust thanks to a lethal case of the stabs brought on by Vincent, and thus ends that part of the story. Favorite moment for me came right after when we saw through van Gogh's eyes and into the heart and soul of previously mentioned favorite painting, Starry Night. Yes, I am an art geek (among other things). No, I am not ashamed of this. In fact, I hope this inspires others to go check out an art museum sometime and experience some of his work (and others) for themselves.
Second favorite moment was van Gogh getting a peek inside the TARDIS. I love everyone's usual reaction of "OMG it's bigger on the inside" but his was especially good - "How is it I'm the crazy one and you've remained sane". And thank you very very much to The Doctor for showing Vincent van Gogh how important his work is going to become to future generations. He may be about ready to die in his time, but now he knows that his work will live forever. It reminded me of when he did a similar thing for Charles Dickens in letting him know his books would be timeless. I only can wish that someone like The Doctor really comes around and lets these greats know how truly special they were.

Wimbledon Gentlemen's & Ladies' Quarterfinals
Wimbledon is in week 2, which means we are getting down to the wire here. Tomorrow will be the Ladies Quarterfinals. Matches are as follows:
On Centre Court - first match is Clijsters vs. Zvonareva followed by Serena Williams vs. La Ni of China.
On Court 1 - first up is Pironkova vs. Venus Williams followed by Kvitova vs. Kanepi
Predictions: Clijsters, both Williams sisters, and... I'm not sure. That last match features two people I am not familiar with, as I tend to follow Men's Singles much more closely than the Ladies, as of late.
Wednesday will be the Men's Quarterfinals, which looks like it will be much more interesting (in my opinion). The draw stands as thus:
Federer vs. Berdych
Djokovic vs. Lu (who beat Andy Roddick for a spot in the Quarters)
Tsonga vs. Murray
Soderling vs. Nadal
Predictions - Federer, Djokovic, Murray, and... I'm not sure. I want to say Nadal but I know he is having knee problems, so that makes this tricky. He might make it past the Quarters, but if he plays Murray in the Semifinals then I think it will at least be a pretty decent battle to the Finals. I'd personally love to see Murray vs. either Federer or Djokovic in the Final match. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though. After all, in this tournament anything is possible.

Happy Birthday, Felicia Day
News on Shuffle would like to wish Felicia Day a very happy birthday. The actress has been involved with a number of our favorite things, many of which were created by this Joss Whedon character you keep hearing about. Besides guest appearance on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse, she has also made an appearance on our new favorite show: Lie to Me. Oh, and she is the star of two of the best thing the internets have given us: Dr. Horrible (another Whedon gem) and The Guild (which she not only created, but also somehow roped Wil Wheaton into being the most awesome character EVER. Geeks everywhere unite, for The Guild is something we can all get behind. If you follow Miss Day on Twitter, you know that S4 of The Guild has finished production and will be available for viewing soon. And if you've never seen this little geek-tastic wonder before, well what are you waiting for?! Follow the link down the rabbit hole and enjoy. Each episode is pretty short so even though there are 3 seasons it shouldn't take too long to get through them all. And as a little birthday present for everyone (b/c 3 seasons of The Guild wasn't enough) here is my favorite scene from Dr Horrible, starring the birthday girl herself.

Isner vs Mahut - Final Stats
After 11 hours & 5 minutes of exceptional tennis, Isner and Mahut finally concluded their epic battle that began two days earlier. The match was the longest a Grand Slam has ever seen, both in time and number of games total. The match finally ended when Isner broke Mahut to make it 70-68 in the final set.
Here are some more stats for you:
Match length - 11 hours, 5 minutes
5th set length - 8 hours, 11 minutes
# of games total - 183
# of games in the 5th set - 138
Total # of points - 980
# of aces - Isner 112, Mahut 103
Other stats and highlights can be found on the Wimbledon website, which I have linked to above. There were other things that amazed me about this match besides the impressive stats, however. The records broken are all wonderful things, but what amazes me even more is the sportsmanship these two athletes showed, as well as the support they received from the crowd. Based on the sheer number of people in attendance you would have guessed this drama was taking place on Centre Court, not Court 18. Every single one of those people in attendance can consider themselves lucky, for they are now able to say they were a part of tennis history.
The other thing I liked about this match was it's conclusion. Both players hugged each other instead of giving the usual handshake. Also, Wimbledon officials commemorated each player for their historical performance. Included in the ceremony was British #1 Tim Henman, who was one of my all-time favorite players to watch before his retirement. I cheered especially loud every time he came close to making the finals at Wimbledon, since the last time a British player made the finals of their Championship was Bunny Austin in 1938 and the last win was Fred Perry in 1936. I don't know, I guess I thought they were due a win. That and Henman had more class than I thought was possible for one person to have. It is good to see him continue to take part in tennis, even if it is not as a player.
Again, congrats to both players for a spectacular performance. Special congrats go to Isner for giving America another win. You made the country (as well as your mother, if the interview she did was any indication) very proud. Go Team USA!

Mahut vs Isner - Tennis History in the Making
Any tennis fans in the house probably know that Wimbledon started this week. Today saw the most epic tennis match in the history of the sport. Nicolas Mahut and John Isner played an epic match today that broke all sorts of records (and is still going on, mind you). First of all, it was the longest match in history - currently at around 9 hours in length. It also has the record for most aces in one match. Isner has 98 and Mahut has 94. They are tied in the 5th set (with Wimbledon there is no tiebreak in the 5th) and each have 59 games. You heard that right. The final set is tied 59-all. And they're STILL NOT DONE. This match actually started yesterday and got called for darkness. The same thing happened today. Hopefully tomorrow this epic battle finally ends in a satisfactory manner. After how much work both parties have put into this match, they deserve a good finish. There was a poll done to see how many people think maybe they should introduce a tiebreak in the 5th set and most people seem to say no to that idea. Personally I love epic matches like this. They get you invested in a story and its characters to the point where you don't care who wins - you just want to enjoy the excellent level of tennis you are getting and pray it doesn't end too soon. The way this match is going I would say the only people who would be disappointed are those who had to leave before it finished. The story should end tomorrow (for one of them permanently), but it will be one for the record books, folks. Whatever happens, no regrets. Just good tennis.
Doctor Who - Cold Blood
Sorry for the late recap here, folks. (I seem to be saying that a lot lately). Once June is over there will be a lot less going on, so the last few Doctor Who episodes will be watched when they are actually on. For now, enjoy this recap of Cold Blood. It was part 2 of the episode from the week before.
*I'm sure it goes without saying but - SPOILER ALERT*
The Doctor and his female companion (not Amy) have both been taken by the Silurians underground. He tries to negotiate a peaceful solution, but the Silurians just counter with a proposal of their own - his execution. Meanwhile, Amy has escaped from her Silurian captors and is in search of The Doctor. And the Silurian that had been taken by our human group is trying to provoke them into killing her in order to fuel conflict between the two species. Yet again I have to say how much I love these stories about human nature. I said in last week's recap how the Silurians always seem to really bring this out. I have loved all the flashbacks to past situations, and continued to do so with this episode.
Eventually the whole group gets reunited, but only to be captured again. The leader eventually realizes what is going on and tries to settle the issue peacefully though. Other things I love about the Silurians - the fact that some of them actually want to be peaceful about this. Just like us humans, some are more violent than others. It's great to see this portrayal that not all aliens are bad. That different does not have to be a bad thing.
Back to the story though - Things are looking bad for our heroes with the death of the Silurian they had captured. The Doctor gives another of his epic speeches about the future being dependent on what happens today and Amy gives about the same reaction I would - "Well, no pressure there." Brilliant!
Other things I liked about this episode - how half of it was from the point of view of the lead Silurian. And how said Silurian actually seemed to be willing to work with the humans at a peaceful solution. He actually wanted them all to work together. IR students, take note. Peaceful negotiations actually work when both sides are willing to bring something to the table. True there will always be radicals in every group, but they usually represent the minority. A strong leader who is willing to work towards a change can do remarkable things.
On the other hand, sometimes that one radical can really mess things up. The lesser of the group becomes the representative of the whole race. One human makes a mistake and it has the potential to destroy everything. All because they choose the violent solution. See, people, violence never solves anything. I was really disappointed that a peaceful solution was in sight and then destroyed by one human. The Doctor has always had to let the Silurians down, and I really wanted to see some redemption for him here. I did love the idea, however, of making it so they would get another chance at sharing planet Earth 1,000 years from now. Hopefully that is enough time for the human race to sort itself out and finally learn how to co-exist with other species.
Final bit of academics for the day - how were Rory and Amy both on the hill if Rory dies here? I guess you're going to tell me that time traveling changed things but that will just lead to a huge paradoxical debate (which are fun but take up loads of time that I don't really have here). I mean, Rory doesn't just die - all the memories of him get wiped. Maybe that makes it less painful for Amy, but that doesn't necessarily make it better. I was angry at Rory's death, and Amy should be too. I really wanted the two of them to make it till happily ever after.
The final scene where they reveal the piece of the TARDIS suggests very big things are going to happen in the last few weeks. Make sure you stay tuned, because you're not going to want to miss a single second of it.

Why I Love Technology - Starring Jukebox the Ghost
I have already mentioned how much I love Twitter and all the reason why. Let me add to that how much I love technology in general. First there was the post on Twitter this morning that said:
Good mornin' tweeters. We're playing 5 shows in NYC today (one in every borough) ! Come find us.
I then followed a link to this note on Facebook that gave locations and times for each spot they were going to hit. Then I used my cellphone to call a couple friends to make plans to meet up (and postpone plans with two others for tomorrow afternoon). So yeah, I love technology. Without it I would never have been able to have one of the most epic adventures ever. In case you missed it, I got plenty of pics and video footage of the event. I'll update this post as soon as I finish editing everything (which should be no later than this weekend). Until then, this is News on Shuffle signing off.

Happy Birthday, Joss Whedon
News on Shuffle would like to send a very happy birthday shout-out to the man, the myth, the legend - Joss Whedon. He is the writers of some of your humble blogger's favorite shows, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly (and the subsequent movie, Serenity), and Dollhouse. He also is the person you can thank for the internet cult classic Dr. Horrible. Most of my favorite actors I discovered on his shows, and they played some of my favorite characters in television history. It was recently announced that he would write and direct the new Avengers movie that is due out May 2012. he also will be working on the screenplay for the Captain America movie coming out July 2011. This gives Whedonites everywhere something to get excited about. Also worth checking out might be Cabin in the Wood, which Joss wrote and stars a pretty awesome cast (including Bradley Whitford, Fran Kranz, and Amy Acker - the latter two which were on previous Whedon shows). To mark the occasion, here is a video I recently found that made me smile (courtesy of Whedonesque). It includes clips from all of Whedon's shows.

Wimbledon Men's & Women's Draw Announced
The draw for Men's and Women's Wimbledon singles matches has been announced. Here are the notables from each section.
Men:
Section 1 features Roger Federer, who looks to have a clear path to the Quarterfinals. Section 2 has a few potentials, including Novak Djokovic, Lleyton Hewitt, and Andy Roddick. I also wouldn't mind seeing Taylor Dent or Mardy Fish make it through, although that is more of a long shot. Andy Murray should have a clear path in Section 3, although I will be routing for Robert Kendrick to surprise us all. As for Section 4, Nadal will probably take this section, but I will be cheering on James Blake and Robby Ginepri. Blake especially though, because he is my favorite of the American players. Not only is he a good player on the court, he has showed heart and strength off the court as well. His story is an inspiring one that I'll probably do a feature on at a later date.
Women:
I honestly care less about the Ladies singles, but that is mostly because most of the players I used to route for either no longer play or have a very slim chance of actually winning. Usually the Championship goes to one of the Williams sisters, and I'm sorry but this is starting to get old for me. I will still predict winners based on likelihood rather than personal preference though. For Section 1, it will probably either be Serena or Sharapova (more likely Serena though, as Sharapova has dropped considerably in the rankings as of late). Section 2 doesn't really have anyone worth noting that I can see, so I'll go with the rankings and say Wozniacki of Denmark takes this section. Section 3 will hopefully go to Clijsters, although Petrova and Jankovic have a decent chance too. Section 4 will likely go to Venus Williams, but I will be routing for Sania Mirza of India. I have loved her since her first year appearing in the majors where she surprised everyone by making it all the way to the 4th round in the US Open. I said then that she had potential for greatness, and I'm really hoping this is the year we see that.
Those are all my notables for this year's Wimbledon. The complete draw is available on the Wimbledon website. 1st round starts June 21st. Keep it tuned to News on Shuffle for all the latest in tennis news and highlights.
This Is Why We Stay in Happy Town
Sorry about the massive delay on this recap, folks, but my schedule for the past week or so has been pretty crazy. But you don't really care about that, do you? You just want to soak up as much Happy Town as you can before it goes away forever. So, here it goes…
*Note: if you haven't watched this one yet then you are slower than I am - congratulations! If you are worried about being spooled then you should probably get watching before you read this though. This is your SPOILER ALERT, people. You have been warned*
Last week Rachel reappeared after being kidnapped from the Magic Man. This week we see her making an attempt to get her life back on track while the rest of the town tries to figure out what to do next. Rachel may have come back safely, but the rest of the missing people are still out there, and there is renewed hope that they are still alive. Rachel is having trouble adjusting though, and who can blame her? She's been through a trauma bad enough that she doesn't remember any of it. I honestly couldn't blame her for wanting to leave town. Normally I would be angry at the husband for not joining her, but I understand his need to stay in town and make every effort to catch this guy. As bad as he probably wanted it before, it has now become personal. There is no way he stops digging until he finds the guy responsible for causing so much destruction for his hometown. I was really glad to see Rachel not only understand that, but realize her place was right there by his side. Kudos!
At this point I'd like to give my award for most interesting character - The most interesting character on this show has to be Henley. In this episode we see her making some deal with Mrs. Haplin where she swaps the mystery hammer for a whole lot of cash. Curiouser and curiouser. Seems she is being blackmailed for something though because Mrs. Haplin doesn't want her leaving their happy little town. I know we're supposed to get the Magic Man mystery solved, but I wonder how much we'll eventually figure out about Henley and any other questions we have unanswered right now. I hope they don't leave us hanging too much or I will be a very unhappy customer.
Speaking of the Magic Man, it cannot be coincidence that the disappearances stopped when Greggy went to jail and promptly started up again the minute he got back. On the other hand, it seems almost too obvious. Also, Greggy seems smart enough to realize if he started up again right away that he would be the #1 suspect (assuming he is the Magic Man, that is). Would he really be stupid enough to leave such an obvious trail leading straight to him? I'm not completely convinced yet.
Award for second most interesting character goes to Merritt Grieves. From a conversation with Rachel Conroy we learn that his son went missing, and he believes the Magic Man is the one who took him. He asks Rachel if she will allow him to try to help her remember what happened when she was taken. As a psychology student I'm somewhat skeptical on whether or not hypnosis actually works. Even still, I enjoy when it is used as a plot device. That's the beauty about fiction - you don't have to believe things really work to enjoy them. In this case it helps Rachel remember flashes, but not who actually took her. We do get a sense that wherever she was taken was the same place the other women were being held, which means that those who are missing are likely still alive.
The only story from this episode that seemed to have no purpose was Georgia and Haplin's son wandering through the forest in an attempt to get away from the craziness of the town. That was until they found a camper hidden in said forest. A camper that seems to belong to the Magic Man, as it has something that belongs to one of the victims. Whoever owns the camper drives off before the kids can get out. Not sure if he realizes he has a stow-away or not, but pretty soon it won't matter. There's nowhere for these kids to hide, so they'll be discovered sooner or later.
Final wrap-up for this one - the police have found evidence that suggest the first victim was involved with John Haplin. This same evidence also suggests to them that Haplin might possibly be the guy they are looking for and only kidnapped his daughter to divert suspicion. I would have thought the same except he looked genuinely concerned about his daughter's disappearance. Unless that was just guilt over what he had done…?
The only other thing worth noting is Henley asking Grieves for help in getting the money to mystery person (who I think is her mother but I'm not sure if they actually said it was or I just made it up in my head). Grieves says yes, but while he's on the train heading out of town someone grabs him from behind. For those who had to wait a whole week for the conclusion of that - I'm sorry. The ending kinda made me glad I waited so long to finally watch this one. No worries though, I will definitely be watching tonight's episode either tomorrow or Friday, so there won't be as long a wait for my next recap.
What did you think of this episode? How about the show in general? As usual, feel free to sound off in the comments section below.

Happy Birthday, Neil Patrick Harris
News on Shuffle would like to wish Neil Patrick Harris a very happy birthday. NPH has been in a number of our favorite things, including Dr Horrible, Glee, and How I Met Your Mother. He has also appeared on Broadway a few times, including the revival of Cabaret and the original cast of Assassins. My favorite of these however has to be Dr Horrible. It was a low-budget internet film that grew into a cult phenomena (at least among Whedon fans). The whole cast was great, but Harris was without a doubt my favorite.
Harris has been sharing his birthday wishes with his followers on Twitter for the past week now. The list is entertaining enough to be as much a present for us as it could be for him.
Things I Want for my Birthday (6/15), Chapter 1: an iPhone 4, magical automatons, original Banksy art, and 1 million followers.
Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 2: Haunted Mansion memorabilia, an actual Muppet, the superpower to eliminate oil from water, a pony.
Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 3: a working, authentic fortune teller booth, and Danielle Staub's sex tape - but only on Blu-Ray.
Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 4: a saltwater aquarium, rad clothes from All Saints, wood burning brick pizza oven, and Disneyland.
What I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 4: Panasonic 152" 3D plasma TV, Red Dead Redemption for Xbox, the ability to donate blood, and NPH.com. (Correction: Errr... That was Chapter 4.1.)
Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 5(ish): Giant labyrinth hedge maze, many lengthy massages, an Immunity Idol from Survivor, and socks. (Changed my mind. Instead of socks, I want a three bedroom loft in SoHo.)
Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 7: a goose that lays gold eggs for Easter, map to One-Eyed Willie's treasure, lifetime supply of Tums
Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 8: A rolla bolla, VIP seats to the US Open, this skill: http://tiny.cc/77gtw and a spider monkey.
This morning he posted that CBS got him the Idol he asked for...
The CBS gang got me perhaps the coolest gift ever - the actual Immunity Idol from Survivor: China! Check it: http://yfrog.com/msar9lj
At least he got one thing off the list. As for my contribution, I'm going to try to get him that 1 million followers... either that or the spider monkey.

2010 Tony Awards - Part II
I was so excited about Memphis winning Best Musical last night that I neglected to mention some of my favorite moments from the rest of the show. I'm going to correct this error now.
First of all, I loved having Sean Hayes as a host. He was funny without being too crass and a real joy on stage. I actually considered going to see Promises, Promises based on his performance at the Tonys. Speaking of performances, they were all very good this year. I didn't dig Fela! as much as other people seem to, but I think that was just personal preference. The rest all did a splendid job and picked great numbers to represent the best the show had to offer. Finally, Lea Michele and Matt Morrison both did a splendid job with their performances. I especially loved the choice of "Don't Rain On My Parade" for Michele. I might just have that song stuck in my head for the next week, thanks to her. Oh, and when Morrison is done with Glee then he has to make his way for the Broadway lights (again). I would go see just about any show he was in. Broadway was made for him.
What were your favorite moments of this year's Tony Awards? How many of the nominated shows had you actually seen? As always, feel free to sound of in the comments section below.

Doctor Who - The Hungry Earth
Sorry for the late recap, but I have class on Saturdays now. I know, lame, right? Anywho… without further ado, here is your recap of The Hungry Earth. *insert usual SPOILER ALERT here*
This week gave us part one of the two part episode which brought back the classic Who villains, the Silurians. If you were a fan of the original series, the last time you saw these guys was during Warriors of the Deep, which featured Peter Davison as The Doctor. Our Doctor's adventure with them starts with a "big mining thing" and his natural curiosity that has gotten him into trouble countless other times before.
In terms of the Silurians, past encounters have been due to research or military bases that have awakened the creatures. This time it is a drilling project that does it.
While The Doctor and Amy is directly dealing with the danger, Rory gets sucked in to a problem that is connected with the Silurians underground activities (and we use the term "underground" in the literal sense here). There are bodies in the graveyard that have gone missing, and one of the townsfolk have asked Rory to figure out why.
Something I have noticed in watching both the current series and classic Who is that humans tend to be very foolish on the show and rarely ever trust The Doctor, even though he usually knows best how to handle the situation. There was more of this seen in this episode, especially from one person in particular. I love that the kid trusts The Doctor almost immediately but his Mom is skeptical throughout the show. It just goes to show how perceptive kids can be and how easily they except even the most impossible of scenarios. It's a shame we tend to lose this as adults. Perhaps Doctor Who can be a lesson to try to keep the inner child from dying within us all.
Back to the matter hand though… Our bit of sunshine through the rain - when they are trying to get inside the one building but the door sticks:
Rory: Can't you just sonic it?
Doctor: It doesn't do wood.
Rory: That's rubbish.
Doctor: Oy! Don't dis the sonic!
Words to remember, folks. Words to remember...
It is worth noting that we don't actually get our first glimpse of the Silurians until halfway point. That should have been our first clue this would be a two-parter (assuming you hadn't read about it somewhere before). It also takes about this long for The Doctor to figure out who (or what) they are dealing with.
It is always fun watching The Doctor interact with different species, but it is especially true with the Silurians. They have been on Earth since before even the human race and have always fascinated The Doctor as a race. He also has always regretted not being able to negotiate a lasting peace between the two species. "Nobody dies today," he says. Fans of the classic series remember the last encounter with the Silurians and you will know just how important it is to him to keep that promise.
Part 1 of our adventure ends thus: The captured Silurian says one of our group will kill her and ignite a war between the two species. Meanwhile, The Doctor and his TARDIS are dragged underground where the rest of the Silurian tribe is (which turns out is really an entire civilization). Oh, and Amy is in danger of being dissected by a member of said tribe.
Will The Doctor be able to keep his promise and keep Amy and the rest of them from dying? You'll just have to tune in next week to find out.

World Cup News - June 13, 2010
Today's World Cup action included the second match from Group C and both matches from Group D. There was tons of excitement including a red card in every match.
First up was Algeria-Slovenia. This was our Group C match-up. Final score for this one was 1-1, but I think part of that might have been the red card for Algeria.
Second was Serbia-Ghana. Serbia got a red card followed by a yellow, which lead to a penalty kick where Ghana scored. Final was 1-0 Ghana.
The last match for today was Germany-Australia. Germany dominated, scoring twice in each half to make the final score 4-0. Looks like they will be making it pretty far in this tournament.
Tomorrow's matches include Netherlands-Denmark at 7:30 AM, Japan-Cameroon at 10 AM, and Italy-Paraguay at 2:30 PM. For all the scores and highlights, keep it tuned to News on Shuffle.

World Cup News - June 12, 2010
For those of you who don't follow News on Shuffle on Twitter, the blog will be reporting as much of the World Cup as we can. This will sometimes include play-by-play action on the Twitter-feed, especially during USA matches. Here are today's highlights:
The first match of the day was Korea-Greece. I unfortunately couldn't watch this match, but the final score had Korea win 2-0. This was the first match from Group B
The second match from Group B was Argentina-Nigeria. I was able to follow this one partially online. Argentina had a strong start and was able to win 1-0.
The real big match for the day was England-USA. England scored within the first few minutes, but USA was able to get a lucky break just before the end of the first half to tie it up. The final score was 1-1. Both teams were in Group C.
The other match from Group C will be tomorrow between Algeria and Slovenia. That is the early match for the day (7:30 AM start time in the US). Other matches for tomorrow include Serbia-Ghana and Germany-Australia. Personally that last match is the one I am looking forward to most of all.
Have any comments on today's World Cup action? Feel free to share your thoughts on any of today's matches (or the tournament overall). Just remember - try to play nice. I would hate to feel the need to censor anyone for being inappropriate :/

Glee - Journey
Warning: some spoilers contained in this blog on Glee's season finale.
The blog hasn't covered Glee nearly as much as it would have liked, but you can blame that on the competing time-slot with Lost and an overabundance of schoolwork. The season finale was so overwhelmingly good that I couldn't keep silent about just how it made me feel. It was an emotional roller coaster that had already completely wiped me out by the first quarter. When Quinn's mom showed up just in time to hear their performance... done. And their Journey medley was basically a mash-up of all my favorites by them, with the show-stopping "Don't Stop Believing" tacked on at the end for added emotional power. Now you need to understand something - I don't cry. That's not to say I'm heartless, I just normally don't get emotional over television shows. Glee's season finale had so much heart though, well, you would have to be heartless to not feel something watching these kids lay everything out on that stage and enjoying every minute of it. I was sorry to see such an unfair treatment by the judges in giving them third place. Vocal Adrenaline's performance of Queen's hit "Bohemian Rhapsody" was great (as were the scenes of Quinn's delivery that went with it) but New Directions definitely deserved second place. Having said that, it was a nice surprising twist having Sue be the one to not only defend New Directions during the judging process, but save them from extinction once they got back to school. They now get one more year to prove their worth to Principal Figgins (they've already proved themselves to their fans). I am confident that next season will be just as good as the first, and possibly even better.
What did you think of last night's finale (or the season as a whole)? Sound off in the comments section below.

New Torchwood Series Confirmed
It's official - Starz and BBC have joined forces to give us an International Torchwood. Not all the details are available but here is what we have so far:
Russell T Davies wrote the pilot 7 months ago and did not take what network it would be on into consideration. Which I think is code for he didn't care what anyone said and is not going to be watering things down to make people happy. Which shouldn't be a problem now that Starz will be the network airing the series.
The people behind the show want it to be made clear that this is not a reboot of the show but a continuation of the old series. They are just changing locations to enable more flexibility with the story.
Speaking of story, the only details on that front are the number of episodes that it will take to complete said story - 1o. Which is twice the length of Children of Earth. Imagine the possibilities...
Besides Russell being involved, there are also many other names connected with the previous series coming back (on both sides of the camera) including the two main stars: John Barrowman and Eve Myles. There will also be some new faces as well to complete the team.
Finally, the series air date has not been officially announced but we know it will be sometime during summer 2011. That means we only have one year to wait before we finally get our fix of Torchwood that we've been craving. And I'm sure there will be lots more updates from Team Barrowman both on Twitter and his website. News on Shuffle will also give you the latest news as it is made available to us.

Doctor Who - Amy's Choice
Sorry about the late posting here. I wish I could say I have lots for you, but this one had so many twists and turns I tried to just keep it simple. So, without further ado, I present - Amy's Choice.
The opening scene showed Amy pregnant (which made me think - This can't be real!). Then The Doctor shows up and says something about it being 5 years later. I barely had enough time to owner if maybe this was real before they fall asleep and wake up in the TARDIS. Confused yet? Yeah, I was too.
Eventually I figured out that they're switching between the real world and a dream world. And it's all thanks to some Dream Lord character. One world's real, one world's not, and they have to figure out which one's which. It was loads of fun trying to follow both worlds and guessing which one was the real one. Both worlds have a danger in them - in one they are in danger of freezing to death and the other they are being chased by a dangerous alien species that has hidden itself in the bodies of the elderly. At first it seems like the episode won't have anything to do with the overall story arc, but by about midway point I realized this is all about Amy and how she is split between these two worlds. She loves Rory but knows life with him will probably be quite boring in comparison to her life with The Doctor. So even though there is no romantic attachment to The Doctor there still is conflict in terms of where she wants to be. I know, I should have seen this a lot sooner given the title of the episode, but your Blogger can be a bit slow at times. Which is ok, because Amy can be a bit slow too and takes forever to finally commit to something and make her choice. Of course it takes Rory "dying" for her to realize that is who she wants to be with.
Shocking twist: BOTH WORLDS WERE A DREAM. So people guessing which one was the dream world - you were right and wrong at the same time. And those guessing which world was real, well, you were all wrong. Also, The Doctor says the Dream Lord was really him. I guess the purpose was a life lesson for all of them.
As always, there was a Doctor Who Confidential that went with the episode. This week we got some behind-the-scenes stuff that kinda made me wish I was there (mostly because they seem to be having loads of fun together). Much love especially to Arthur Darvill (Rory), who has been a great addition to the cast.
Doctor Who will be on again next week at 9pm. The next episode is Hungry Earth.

Happy Town - Slight of Hand
After taking a break for the past couple of weeks, the residents of Happy Town came back to entertain us last night. Well, most of them did. In the last episode, Tommy's wife (played by Amy Acker) went missing at the same time the incarcerated Stiviletto brother resurfaced. Could Greggy Stiviletto be the Magic Man we keep talking about? Stay tuned to find out.
We begin this week with the search for Rachel Conroy. It looks like every police officer in town is on the case. Some flowers were left on the door to the Conroy house that seem to be the Magic Man's calling card. In desperation, he goes to visit his crazy old man for help. "Go see the englishman," he says.
Englishman = Merritt Grieves.
Tommy takes him into the station for questioning, calling him a "person of immense interest". He was definitely on my short list for at the very least being involved somehow. He claims he has an alibi for the night (playing cards with the widows of the boarding house) but then reveals he collects information on the Magic Man. By the end of the night we learn he is interested in the case for personal reasons, but we don't know exactly what those reasons are.
The other story for the week was Henley/Chloe trying to get the creepy goat hammer from Aiden/Greggy. Thought: What is with the double identities meeting each other? And is it a coincidence they hooked up? I guess it makes sense that the two shady people with a past would be drawn to each other, but it seems like more than that maybe. Second thought: Why is it that all of the Stiviletto brothers seem crazy except Greggy? Or is it that Greg is the smart kind of crazy? Which would make him more dangerous.
Back to the main story though: A severed hand shows up in the bread factory. I don't know what grossed me out more, the idea of cutting someone's hand off or that it was mixed in with the bread supply for the entire town. Strike that, the second one is definitely grosser. I don't think I could even look at a loaf of bread again for quite some time if I lived in that town (especially if I was there to see it happen). Anyway, Tommy identifies the ring on the hand as Rachel's engagement ring but says it isn't Rachel's hand. Which actually made sense to me from a casting standpoint. Why get Amy Acker to be one of the stars of the show and then kill her in episode 4? Maybe I'm just bias but I feel like she is one of the bigger names on the cast list. Anyway, it turns out the hand belonged to the first victim and was only severed approximately 48 hours ago. That means the girl had been alive up until that point. Which means that the rest of the victims could be alive too. And not too much later Rachel is found alive, proving my suspicions were correct. All she remembers is being at the festival and everything going dark. Next thing she knows, she is waking up in her own bathtub. She has no idea where she went and didn't see who nabbed her. Dave mysteriously turns up at the house though, which makes me wonder about him. Maybe all that stuff from before was him covering his tracks because he is really the guy they are looking for…? Or maybe it is a red-herring to throw us off the track.
In other news, Carl Bravin is stuck in his basement with… who is that? We see his face but I couldn't tell who it was. I'm not even sure it's someone we're supposed to know at this point. Mystery Man drives off at the end of the episode, leaving George behind. What's up with that? More questions to add to the ever-growing pile.
The very last words of the evening are a declaration from Tommy Conroy that "We are going to find the Magic Man". And that brings us to half-way point for the season (and likely the series). It has been promised that by the last episode (which airs June 30th) we will know who the Magic Man is. That is the only reason I am still watching this show, since ABC doesn't seem to want to give it the chance it deserves. There is a petition going around to save the show and a Twitter campaign to go with it, but I am skeptical it will do much good. I have still participated though in the hopes I will be pleasantly surprised.

Hawaii Five-O
Now that summer is upon us and all our shows are wrapping up for the season (if they haven't already) it is time for us to take a look at some new potentials for the fall season. Hawaii Five-O wasn't on my to-do list until I watched the trailer.
It looks entertaining enough (for what it is) and seems to have a good cast. I loved Alex O'Loughlin in "Moonlight" and Daniel Dae Kim is fresh from a great stint on "Lost". I'll probably watch the first episode because I like the cast and see if it tickles my fancy any.

Arcade Fire Announce Tour, Headlining Madison Square Garden
If you've been waiting for the chance to see Arcade Fire live, well your wait is officially over. The band announced a tour that, among other places, will hit Madison Square Garden in August. There haven't been many other US dates announced as of now, but the list has been growing for the past couple of days, so if you don't see your city then don't panic just yet. The dates that have been announced so far are:
Jun 28 - Helsinki, FI @ Senaatintori
Jun 30 - Rättvik, SE @ Dalhalla
Jul 02 - Arendal, NO @ Hove Festival
Jul 04 - Werchter, BE @ Rock Werchter
Jul 09 - Eadestown, IE @ Oxegen
Jul 12 - Quebec City, QC @ Festival d'ete de Quebec
Jul 13 - Ottawa, ON @ Ottawa Bluesfest
Jul 31 - Montreal, QC @ Osheaga Music Festival
Aug 03 - New York, NY @ Madison Square Garden
Aug 08 - Chicago, IL @ Lollapalooza
Aug 12 - Toronto, ON @ Toronto Centre Island
Aug 27 - Leeds, UK @ Leeds Festival
Aug 28 - Reading, UK @ Reading Festival
Aug 29 - Saint-Cloud, FR @ Rock en Seine
Aug 31 - Berlin, DE @ Tempodrom
Aug 02 - Bologna, IT @ I-Day Festival
Oh, and for those curious about the opening act, that was announced too: Spoon. The same band that headlined Radio City in March. Me thinks whatever these tickets (which go on sale June 12th) cost is going to be worth it.
